Background

Nzove school is located in Nyarugenge District, in the peri-urban of the City of Kigali, It has 2500 primary and secondary students, with 53% being female and 47% being male.

It has an Environment Club with 75 active members. The school has no boarding and has a green area at relatively very small scale.

The needs Identification

The school covers an area of 0.8ha and has greening at approximately 45%, the school needs trees and greening covering all surrounding areas, in its garden and playground.

The school also has no drinkable water and electricity. Moreover students and staff are not at a good level of understanding to the concept of environmental protection/conservation and climate change mitigation.

The activity

Environment education/ awareness is one of the key areas of focus of the Organization to raise awareness as well as take immediate action for environmental protection, conservation and climate change mitigation involving every level of community.

It is within the same scope that WDGO identified and organized fruit tree planting, greening, educating and capacity strengthening activities at this school.

The activities involved young environmentalists, the primary and secondary school children and the school staff. WDGO taught all involved and later on with the beneficiaries planted 10 fruit trees at the school as a kick start.

Impact to the school and community

  • Capacity strengthening to the school environment club and staff
  • Environmental awareness to beneficiaries
  • Implantation of environmentalist mindset at their early ages and grow like that.

Way forward

WDGO will continue its greening activities including fruits trees planting, gardening, trees for fencing as well as environmental education at this school to ensure a complete green, more resilient and more comfortable place for learning.
